Coenzyme Q10

CoQ10 is produced by the human body and is necessary for the basic functioning of cells. It is a fat soluble vitamin-like substance present in the mitochondria of all the cells in the body. It is vital because it carries the protons and electrons that are used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the bodies immediate source of energy into the cells. This process is constant because the body can store only a small quantity of ATP at anyone time.

A lack of sufficient CoQ10 can lead to heart problems because without it, the heart does not have enough energy to circulate the blood effectively. Coenzyme levels decline with age so it is believed that as many as 75 percent of people over fifty may be deficient in CoQ10. It can be naturally found primarily in fish and meat, however only in very small amounts.

CoQ10 has antioxidant properties similar to those of other fat-soluble antioxidants such as vitamin E, scavenging free radicals and preventing oxidation of lipids and other molecules. In test tube experiments, CoQ10 helps maintain the antioxidant state of vitamin E and possibly does so in the body.

The benefits of CoQ10 are far reaching, however absorption is poor with approximately 60% wasted. Many who supplement with CoQ10 may not be getting the effects they want due to this poor utilisation.
